If you are going to refurbish your kitchen – which many people are doing today – then one of the most important features is the worktops. Our kitchens have become rooms in which we not only cook, do the washing up, and the laundry, but today have replaced the dining room. We eat in the kitchen, watch TV, and even invite family and friends over for a meal.
The fact is that most people choose gracious living, and that means attractive. If you have a stone floor, that will stand out, but the most obvious eye-catching points in any kitchen are the worktops. This is why so many of our customers at Marble & Granite today choose stone worktops. We offer an unrivalled selection of different stone slabs for worktops, and they have different benefits apart from the appearance. Some are porous, some less so. Some are tougher than others, such as granite for example.
Another very popular choice today is quartz worktops in St Albans. Despite the fact that quartz is the most common stone on the planet, it is not suitable for use as it is, as with other stones such as marble or granite. So, the term “quartz worktops” refers to the man-made engineered stone developed by an Italian company in the 1960’s. It is comprised of about 93% actual quartz that has been mixed with special polymers. pigments, and resins, resulting in an extremely hard stone that looks fabulous.
Totally Non-Porous
Quartz is totally non-porous and so is absolutely ideal for use as a worktop in the kitchen where you are preparing food. No bugs or bacteria can get into quartz, as can happen with other stones, so it’s 100% hygienic. If you spill something on it – food, wine, whatever – it won’t stain it. You can just wipe it off with a damp cloth.
On the Mohs scale of hardness, quartz ranks at 7, slightly higher even than granite, so it is almost impossible to damage it. If it has a weakness, it is the resins and polymer content. This means that you must not put hot pans down on it because that could cause damage. Always use a trivet.
As an engineered stone, quartz worktops can be produced in virtually any colour and pattern that you like – or to be more accurate, that the manufacturers choose! We stock a huge selection of different quartz types, made by well-known manufacturers so there is bound to be the perfect choice for your new kitchen.
