If you are considering getting a granite worktop then you may be interested to learn more about the origins of this natural stone.
A clue to the nature of granite is in the name. Granite is derived from the word “granular” and if you look closely at a worktop, you will notice that it is decorated with thousands of tiny grains. Although granite mainly consists of quartz and feldspar, it is also made up of numerous other minerals. These mineral grains fit tightly together to form this hard rock – one of the hardest substances found on Earth.
How was granite formed?
Granite is an igneous rock, which means that it was formed from cooling magma deep under ground. It can be found in every continent of the world, most commonly in mountainous regions in underlying rocks.
Due to its hard, durable nature and attractive “grainy” appearance, it became popular as a material for kitchen worktops. Worktops made from solid granite can be expensive, but generally last for decades.
