Quartz Worktops: What You Need to Know

If you are looking for quartz worktops in Romford, then Marble & Granite is the right place to be. Certainly, we provide and produce worktops in natural stones such as granite, marble, limestone, and more, but many of our customers choose a man-made stone like quartz because of the benefits that it has.

Quartz for use in the home has been with us since the 1960ā€™s. As a natural mineral, quartz is available almost anywhere, but on itsā€™ own it is not suitable for use as a strong worktop material. However, the Italian manufacturer Breton came up with a procedure for using it in conjunction with polymers and resins and the result is the beautiful product that is known as quartz today.

Apart from any other considerations, quartz worktops are remarkably strong and long-lasting. On the Mohs scale of hardness, they are actually rated at 7, which is 0.5 higher than granite ā€“ and granite is a pretty hard rock! This is perfect for use in kitchens where the worktops can come in for a tough time. Quartz is not going to suffer from chips, scratches, or dents as other stones can. Thatā€™s not to say you shouldnā€™t take care of it, but if you do happen to drop a pan on it, it will shrug it off.

Strong And Also Non-Porous

The manufacturing process of quartz not only makes it extremely strong, but it also means that it is non-porous. So, if you spill coffee, red wine, mustard, vinegar, or anything else on it, all you need to do is wipe it off. You will never know it was there. In addition, quartz is unaffected by UV light so if the sun comes through your kitchen window it will have no effect.

Quartz is available in over 100 colours and patterns, some of which mimic marble and granite so well that only an expert can tell the difference. So, for instance, you can have a ā€œmarbleā€ worktop that isnā€™t marble! But of course, this comes without the possibility of staining or chipping which could happen with a marble surface.

However, you do need to take care with hot pans. You should do this anyway, regardless of the material, and always use a trivet. But if you put a hot pan on quartz, it can have an effect because of the resins that are contained within it.

Another big advantage of quartz is that it costs less than most natural stones, so you can have the same aesthetic without the expense.
